Physics is Everywhere Essay As Fall comes to a close and winter is upon us we can take an opportunity to reflect. Fall is the season of many events. For some it is the turning of the leaves that make it so memorable. For students, the excitement of a new school year and what that brings is always on the mind. Also on the mind of students, and professional fans alike, is the exhilaration and anticipation of a new season on the gridiron. This past fall I had the unique chance to document this exhilaration in a different manner. I chose to view the game of football through the eyes of science, physical science in particular. And with my own eyes, I will never view a football game in quite the same way again. Take into consideration open field running, kicking, passing, and even the player surface whether it is grass or artificial turf. These are all issues that physics aff ects. The division of physics that is most relevant to football is motion and its causes. I am going to look at two broad categories of motion as they apply to the game, runners on the field and stopping runners on the field. Watching a weekend football game is teaching you more than you think. Football provides some great examples of physics especially the motion of the players and the force of the tackles. When you look at players on the field, several aspects can be considered: where they line up for a play, changing directions, running in an open field, and line-up positions. When you look at the positions of the backs, both offensive and defensive, we see that they typically line up away from the line of scrimmage on either side of the offensive and defensive linemen. Their positioning allows them room, or time, to accelerate from a state of rest and reach a high speed, to either run with the ball or pursue the ball carrier. Linebackers have far more room to accelerate than the linemen, and the wide receivers have far more room than the linebackers.
