The Purpose of Achievement Tests

The Purpose of Achievement Tests Student Resources Print Achievement Tests How Achievement Tests Measure What People Have Learned By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on February 06, 2020 BFG Images / Getty Images More in Student Resources APA Style and Writing Study Guides and Tips Careers How do we determine what a person knows about a certain subject? Or how do we determine an individuals level of skill in a certain area? One of the most common ways to do this is to use an achievement test. An achievement test is designed to measure a persons level of skill, accomplishment, or knowledge in a specific area. Closer Look at Achievement Tests The achievement tests that most people are familiar with are the standard exams taken by every student in school. Students are regularly expected to demonstrate their learning and proficiency in a variety of subjects. In most cases, certain scores on these achievement tests are needed in order to pass a class or continue on to the next grade level. The role of achievement tests in education has become much more pronounced since the passage of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act.?? This legislation  focused  on standard-based education which was used to measure educational goals and outcomes.  While this law was later replaced by the 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act, achievement testing remains a key element in measuring educational success and plays a role in determining school funding. But achievement tests are not just important during the years of K-12 education and college. They can be used to assess skills when people are trying to learn a new sport. If you were learning dance, martial arts, or some other specialized athletic skill, an achievement test can be important for determining your current level of ability and possible need for further training.   Examples of Achievement Tests Some more examples of achievement tests include: A math exam covering the latest chapter in your bookA test in your social psychology classA comprehensive final in your Spanish classThe ACT and SAT examsA skills demonstration in your martial arts class Each of these tests is designed to assess how much you know at a specific point in time about a certain topic. Achievement tests are not used to determine what you are capable of; they are designed to evaluate what you know and your level of skill at the given moment. As you can see, achievement tests are widely used in a number of domains, both academic- and career-related. Students face an array of achievement tests almost every day as they complete their studies at all grade levels, from pre-K through college. Such tests allow educators and parents to assess how their kids are doing in school, but also provide feedback to students on their own performance. When Are Achievement Tests Used? Achievement tests are often used in educational and training settings. In schools, for example, achievements tests are frequently used to determine the level of education for which students might be prepared. Students might take such a test to determine if they are ready to enter into a particular grade level or if they are ready to pass of a particular subject or grade level and move on to the next. Standardized achievement tests are also used extensively in educational settings to determine if students have met specific learning goals. Each grade level has certain educational expectations, and testing is used to determine if schools, teachers, and students are meeting those standards. So how exactly are achievement tests created? In many instances, subject matter experts help determine what content standards should exist for a certain subject. These standard represent the things that an individual at a certain skill or grade level should know about a particular subject. Test designers can then use this information to develop exams that accurately reflect the most important things that a person should know about that topic. Achievement Tests vs Aptitude Tests Achievement tests differ in important ways from aptitude tests. An aptitude test is designed to determine your potential for success in a certain area. For example, a student might take an aptitude test to help determine which types of career they might be best suited for. An achievement test, on the other hand, would be designed to determine what a student already knows about a specific subject. A Word From Verywell Achievement tests play an important role in education, but they have also been the subject of criticism at times. Some feel that excessive testing interferes with the educational process and places too much emphasis on passing a test while ignoring more important abilities such as critical and creative thinking. However, such tests do provide a fairly efficient way to get an idea of how well students are performing.

Spring Break - Original Writing - 1173 Words

For spring break this year I wanted to something different. So far during my college tenure, I have not done anything that has been adventurous or fun. I have usually used that time to catch up on sleep and homework. But this year I wanted to do something, anything to get out of the house. During last year’s spring break I forgone the chance to go home to only be stuck in my house because it decided to rain all week. Physics is Everywhere Essay - 2435 Words

Physics is Everywhere Essay As Fall comes to a close and winter is upon us we can take an opportunity to reflect. Fall is the season of many events. For some it is the turning of the leaves that make it so memorable. For students, the excitement of a new school year and what that brings is always on the mind. Also on the mind of students, and professional fans alike, is the exhilaration and anticipation of a new season on the gridiron. This past fall I had the unique chance to document this exhilaration in a different manner. I chose to view the game of football through the eyes of science, physical science in particular. And with my own eyes, I will never view a football game in quite the same way again. Dr. Timothy Gay, a†¦show more content†¦I have found that the physics of football go deeper than just blocking and tackling. Take into consideration open field running, kicking, passing, and even the player surface whether it is grass or artificial turf. These are all issues that physics aff ects. The division of physics that is most relevant to football is motion and its causes. I am going to look at two broad categories of motion as they apply to the game, runners on the field and stopping runners on the field. Watching a weekend football game is teaching you more than you think. Football provides some great examples of physics especially the motion of the players and the force of the tackles. When you look at players on the field, several aspects can be considered: where they line up for a play, changing directions, running in an open field, and line-up positions. When you look at the positions of the backs, both offensive and defensive, we see that they typically line up away from the line of scrimmage on either side of the offensive and defensive linemen. Their positioning allows them room, or time, to accelerate from a state of rest and reach a high speed, to either run with the ball or pursue the ball carrier. Linebackers have far more room to accelerate than the linemen, and the wide receivers have far more room than the linebackers. Thus, linebackers can reach higher speeds thanShow MoreRelated Physics is Everywhere Essay1852 Words   |  8 PagesPhysics is Everywhere Physics is like math; it is always being used everywhere, whether we are conscious of it or not. Dean Theatre, Summerville, SC For this cultural event report I decided to attend a musical performance. This was a play of the classic movie Beauty and the Beast. We will write a custom essay sample on Cultural Event Report or any similar topic only for you Order Now This is the first time I have ever attended a live musical and I had an overall good experience. The one thing that I don’t really like is a lot of singing but the acting was extraordinary. The cast was dressed in beautiful brightly colored costumes. The main characters of course were Belle, the Beast, Gaston, and Belle’s father, Maurice. The main thing I did throughout the play was compare it to the actual movie and there were differences but the main plot was the same. I attended the performance with my sister, my kids, and my niece. The kids really enjoyed it, especially the talking teapots! My first impression when entering the theatre was that it was rather small which I expected. The tickets were only $6. 00 for students and children under 3 were free. All the seats were full also. I didn’t really expect people to dress up in nice clothes, and everyone just had on mostly jeans and shirt, nothing fancy. The lighting was good on the stage and I could hear the cast loud and clearly through the speakers. One thing that I didn’t like was the microphones that the cast used. They were rather large and it would have been nicer for them to have a microphone that was a little less revealed. There were about 15-20 cast members in all. Some people seemed to look a bit more comfortable on stage than others. The effect on the stage, while they were singing, was great. My favorite part was in the beginning when the Prince was turned into the beast because he was turning down the woman who turned out to be a beautiful enchantress. It was a good lesson of karma and how true beauty is within and it’s not always about what’s on the outside. The crowd was very respectful to the performers by being quiet during the show. There was a small intermission of about 20 minutes. The play lasted a total of 2 hours. During the intermission there was a small concession stand that had candy, drinks, and popcorn. The show proceeded shortly after. During the part of the performance when Gaston and the Beast are fighting Gaston does stab him. It was kind of sad when Belle thought the beast was dead, but then he transformed back into the Prince. It was a happy ending and the final song was amazing. The singers had very beautiful voices. After going to this performance it makes when want to go see another one to compare and contrast each aspect. I would like to go see a drama written by Shakespeare. It would be a great experience to see actors portray people from a different era. While watching this musical I also thought of movies that involve the same issues, such as the Princess and the Frog and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. When the show had ended the performers were each introduced as they came back onto the stage. Also, we were able to meet and greet with them before we left. The briefly discussed their history with acting and singing and how long it took them to prepare for the show. Everything about the performance was good and they knew how to keep the audience’s attention which is important. I am glad that I was able to attend the show.
